Before browsing these Thanksgiving pie recipes, make sure you have a quality pie crust recipe. This is my absolute favorite pie crust recipe and one of the most popular recipes on this website. The careful ratio of butter and shortening makes a pliable dough that turns into a buttery, flaky crust. I also have an all butter pie crust if you prefer just butter.

Pie Crust Success Tips:

  1. Temperature: Use COLD ingredients.
  2. Flavor and Texture: Not all fats are created equal. This recipe uses a mix of shortening and butter for a pliable dough that bakes up both buttery and flaky.

Out of the list I will be making your favorite cranberry sauce, the soft dinner rolls and finally the pecan praline pumpkin pie (I doing the November challenge).     It’s quite simple and your flaky pie crust will make it all the more special for the holidays! Its 3 cups of halved cranberries (fresh) to 1.5 cups raisins that have been microwaved for a minute with 1to 2 T vanilla and 2 tsp of almond extract. At least 1 cup of sugar to 1.5 c sugar and 3 T flour. The crust is best if your pre-bake the crust for 15 minutes at 425’F. ( Pierce the crust with a fork on the sides to help prevent shrinking.) Then add cranberry mixture and lattice, or traditional top crust. Bake as for your apple pie until it bubbles on a 425′ oven till the crust starts to brown and the filling bubbles.
    If the outer edges of the crust start to get too dark a foil or pie edge cover works well. Placing a cookie sheet under is also advised as it may bubble over. Cook for 45 minutes or until the filling bubbles.
    Cool on a rack.
    The filling should thicken as it cools. My meme made this at Christmas and my mom was lucky enough to have her write this one down. My mom made it every holiday and her daughters have kept this tradition going as well. Enjoy! I found a similar recipe in an old NE cookbook as well.

I’ve watched your videos, but I’m a little confused. Should I blind bake the crusts on both pies and do prick them so they don’t shrink. Thanks for the help.

    1. Hi Carol, you only need to blind bake pie crusts when the recipe calls for it. My pumpkin pie does require blind-baking, but that’s worked into the recipe instructions. Follow that recipe for details.

  19. I love your recipes! I can’t wait to make the sweet potato pie. I plan to use brown sugar bourbon. (that stuff is great!) use only 2 tablespoons. Will your flaky crust be crisp on the bottom in the sweet potato pie? I don’t like soggy crust.

    1. Hi Betty, the bottom crust cooks through but if you want a crisp crust, I recommend partially blind baking it. You can use these instructions for blind baking pie dough.

    1. Hi Karen! I wish we could help more, but we don’t have one. Was it on a pastry crust like our favorite pie crust recipe? Or perhaps on a shortbread crust like this lemon tart recipe? We hope you can find the recipe!
